The
field tour will visit eucalypt seed orchards, research trials and
natural forests in the scenic Huon Valley and Southern Forest
region, south of Hobart. We will visit Forestry Tasmania’s seed
orchards complex at Oigles Road near Geeveston. Highlights include
a working clonal seed orchard of Eucalyptus nitens, a
seedling seed orchard of E. globulus and genetic conservation
stands of rare Tasmania endemic eucalypts. There is also a small CP
progeny trial of E. nitens.
We will then drive to the Tahune Airwalk (one of Tasmania's top
tourist attractions
http://www.tasforestrytourism.com.au/pages/sites_tahune.html,
where we will cross the Huon River and go on the airwalk (canopy
walkway) among the tall trees while our barbeque lunch is being
prepared.
After lunch we will return to Hobart via a different road, stopping
to look at native forest management, and pruned and thinned
plantations of E. nitens.
