The Conference organising Committee is pleased to invite you to attend the 2010 Asia Pacific Regional Conference hosted by Richmond Fellowship Tasmania and supported by beyondblue: the national depression initiative.  It will be held at the Wrest Point Hotel and Convention Centre, Hobart.

Scientific research has given us a far greater understanding of the intricate balance between mind and body and a growing understanding of holistic medicine together with the recognition that our mental and physical health is closely linked.
Recovery from a physical ailment is expected, so too can it be from a mental ailment.  The consequences for both may mean that recovery is not immediate but demands a certain personal responsibility.  Concerns about the relationship between these two aspects of well-being are part of the motivation of Richmond Fellowship in facilitating this Conference, seeking an over-arching approach to mental health policy that looks well into the future.
The theme of this conference is Hope - Recovery - Future.   Its purpose is to explore the range of issues that impinge on the psychosocial well being of everyone.
With the present emphasis on economic growth which is used as an indicator of how well a country is doing, policy makers have been warned about confusing economic activity with well-being.  To achieve this many in the workplace suffer undue stress which engenders harm to the emotional system.  Bhutan, a tiny Himalayan Kingdom, measures its gross national happiness – no major economy has followed suit!  This year the French President Sarkogy suggested countries should foster happiness into their statistics for growth.  Good personal communication, relationships, contentment, happiness – fundamental to our well-being.   Where do we stand?
In our society today there are many negative issues that impinge on our well-being and are of concern to our communities and which governments seem to be either not aware of, or do not pay sufficient attention to.

The purpose of this conference is to explore a wide range of issues in order to encourage effective policy direction which are designed to enhance and improve the well-being of all concerned, both state-wide and nationally.   This entails recognition of the vital roles played by both an individual's sound mental and physical health.

The Richmond Fellowship is a world wide organisation that supports the continual improvement of conditions for those members of our community who suffer the effects of mental illness. In Australia there are Richmond Fellowship programs in every state.
Established in 1984 and with over twenty one years experience in providing residential rehabilitation for people experiencing major mental illness Richmond
Fellowship Tasmania operates eight Programs around Tasmania with residential rehabilitation houses, Recovery Programs and recreational Programs.
Richmond Fellowship Tasmania Inc recently celebrated their 21st Birthday with many friends colleagues and consumers.
Richmond Fellowship are an integral part of mental health in both Tasmania and the whole of Australia and are honoured to welcome delegates from around the world to, what is shaping up to be a most informative and enjoyable conference in 2010.

beyondblue: the national depression initiative

beyondblue is a national, independent, not-for-profit organisation working to address issues associated with depression, anxiety and related substance-use disorders in Australia.

beyondblue is a bipartisan initiative of the Australian, State and Territory Governments with the key goals of raising community awareness about depression and reducing stigma associated with the illness. 

beyondblue works in partnership with health services, schools, workplaces, universities, media and community organisations, as well as people living with depression, to bring together their expertise.

beyondblue’s five priorities

  1. Increasing community awareness of depression, anxiety and related
    substance misuse disorders and addressing associated stigma.
  2. Providing people living with depression and their carers with information on the illness and effective treatment options and promoting their needs and experiences with policy makers and healthcare service providers.  
  3. Developing depression prevention and early intervention programs.
  4. Improving training and support for GPs and other healthcare professionals on depression.
  5. Initiating and supporting depression-related research.
