Writing for Publication Workshop

Have you ever wanted to publish your ideas in a journal or prepare research proposals?
This interactive 2 hour workshop will provide you with information, guidance and feedback on writing for publication in the AENJ and other leading journals.
How will the workshop be run?
The workshop will commence with a presentation that outlines the steps to success in publishing and research. Attendees will work in small groups and work up their publication and research proposals. Mentor/s will provide individual support, feedback and encouragement to achieve your goal. Throughout the workshop you will be discussing and refining your publications or proposals with other workshop participants and mentors.
What will I learn/or take home from this workshop?
At the end of this workshop you will have:
- attendees will leave the workshop with concrete examples of ways to improve journal writing skills
- strategies and advice to increase the likelihood of publication.
- a detailed plan of a manuscript
- a range of strategies and tools to help you prepare a successful manuscript
- assistance through mentoring if you wish further support with your writing and the submission process
- a certificate of attendance
What pre-workshop preparation will I need to do?
You will be required to prepare and bring along a draft manuscript of your publication, or your ideas for a research topic.

Clinical Practice Guidelines and Making them Useful

Workshop Overview
This workshop is being offered again this year after receiving enthusiastic feedback from participants last year.
More and more clinical guidelines appear everyday, some on the same topics but from different organisations. What are the skills we need to discern what a quality guideline is and what makes a guideline actionable. The workshop will be highly interactive using examples of guidelines common to the emergency department.
The presenters will be Scott Bennetts and Jodie Clydesdale from the NHMRC NICS Effective Practice program.
NICS will also profile the winning entry and authors/presenters on the NICS website, www.nhmrc.gov.au/nics.
NHMRC is Australia's peak body for supporting health and medical research. As part of the NHMRC, NICS works to improve health care by getting health and medical research into practice.

X-Ray Interpretation

Workshop Overview
- Upper limb xray interpretation: The shoulder, elbow, forearm, wrist and hand
- Lower limb xray interpretation: The knee, tibia and fibula, ankle and foot
The session will comprise of examination hints for xray requesting and will include the various rules that can be applied to determine whether an xray exam is normal. Examples of commonly encountered injuries and fractures will be shown. It will be of particular use to nurses and nurse practitioners who practise in an extended or advanced clinical role within the emergency or primary care environment, but will enhance the skills of any nurse.

- Be confident in the safe technique for suture instrument use
- Practice the techniques under supervision in a non-threatening peer support environment

Workshop Overview
Do you need more knowledge and confidence in the management of acute and chronic wounds in the emergency department?
This interactive 2 hour workshop will provide you with information and guidance in the assessment and management of acute and chronic wounds.
How will the workshop be run?
The workshop will commence with a presentation that outlines the types of acute and chronic wounds that are commonly seen within the ED. The interactive session will involve small group discussion work which will discuss ED patient scenarios and appropriate management. Workshop leaders will provide support, feedback and discussion on wound management in the ED. Throughout the workshop you will be discussing acute and chronic management with other workshop participants and Workshop leaders.
What will I learn/or take home from this workshop?
At the end of this workshop you will have:
- attendees will leave the workshop with concrete examples of ways to manage a range of patient wounds
- wound care strategies and advice to improve wound management.
- An understanding of the application of a range of wound care products and tools to help you manage patient wounds and produce a safe and appropriate patient outcome

Workshop Overviews
The CENA Trauma Nursing Program (TNP) is an important initiative in Trauma Education for Nurses in Australia. Australasian in context, this program provides instruction on the principles of trauma care, the opportunity to explore skills relevant to the trauma setting and seeks to develop the ability of Australian nurses to deliver trauma care in a variety of settings.
The Emergency Module has been developed for nurses providing emergency care to trauma patients in metropolitan and rural departments. It also addresses issues faced in more remote settings. This module aims to build upon your theoretical knowledge and practice in Emergency Nursing, to develop your assessment and management in the area of common trauma conditions and related clinical skills.
For attendees of the CENA conference, the cost of the module is $380 for CENA members and $420 for non – members. If not attending the conference, the cost is $550 for members and $630 for non – members. The cost includes a Study Guide with which it is suggested you are familiar before attending the workshop; a workshop and access to on-line learning resources. The cut off date for registration is the 24th of August 2010, to allow for distribution of the Study Guide. The venue for the workshop is to be advised. The workshop will be facilitated by experienced clinicians from around Australia, who use interactive teaching and case based discussion to deliver theory and practical sessions. Assessment is delivered after the program, by either online learning or hard copy. Following completion of the assessment you will receive a certificate of achievement.
