The Past ...

Dr Walter Boughton
Honorary Senior Fellow, Griffith University

Dr Walter Boughton has had a long association with the Hydrology & Water Resources Symposia since his first presentation at the 1965 Symposium. In 1988 he was awarded the inaugural G. N. Alexander Medal of the Institution for one of his presentations. In 2004, he received the Arid Lands Hydraulic Engineering Award of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He was Chairman of the IEA College of Civil Engineers in 1977-1978 and a member of the national Council at the same time. In 1982-1984 he was Chairman of the School of Australian Environmental Studies at Griffith University. Now retired, he is an Honorary Senior Fellow of Griffith University. He is the author of many technical papers and reports, and was Editor of the book “A Century of Water Resources Development in Australia 1900- 1999” that was prepared for the 1999 Hydrology & Water Resources Symposium.

 

The Future ...

Dr Rory Nathan
Principal Hydrologist, Sinclair Knight Merz

Dr Rory Nathan is the Principal Hydrologist with Sinclair Knight Merz. He holds degrees in different aspects of engineering hydrology from the Universities of Melbourne and London. He has around 25 years experience in academic and consulting positions, both here and overseas. Rory's technical interests are in environmental hydrology, hydrological processes, extreme events, and hydrologic regionalisation. He maintains an active interest in research at the eWater CRC, and is an Honorary Fellow at the University of Melbourne and at Monash University. He has published over 120 papers in refereed journals and symposium proceedings, and has won several national and international awards for his research. In the year 2000 he was awarded national Civil Engineer of the Year by the Institution of Engineers.

Associate Professor Ron Cox
Director, Water Research Laboratory, University of New South Wales

Ron Cox (presently the Director of Water Research Laboratory, Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of NSW) has been involved for more than 30 years with the development and application of both physical and computer models across a broad spectrum of problems and projects within water engineering and water resources.


 

 

An International Perspective ...

Mr Michael D. Patorno, P.E. Manager Civil/
Structural and Water Resource Groups, URS, New Orleans

Hurricanes and levee repairs in the City of New Orleans

Mr Michael Patorno was born in 1959 in the City of New Orleans. He graduated from the University of New Orleans in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, where he also completed Master Level courses in both Mechanical and Environmental Engineering. Mr Patorno is a registered Civil and Environmental Engineer in the State of Louisiana as well as being registered to practise engineering in the States of Arkansas, Alabama and Mississippi where he manages URS’ Civil/Structural and Water Resource Groups. Mr Patorno oversees the planning, design and construction of large civil projects throughout the Gulf Coast of the United States.

During Mr Patorno’s career he has managed projects which include major flood protection and levee systems, large hydraulic and navigational structures, large drainage pumping stations, major drainage canals, roadways and water resource facilities such as water and sewer treatment systems. Mr Patorno also has specialised experience in hydraulic modeling and has managed several large diversion and mapping projects for local, State and Federal Agencies. Of specific interest, is Mr Patorno’s expertise in working with federal water resource agencies such as the United States Army Corps of Engineers and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
