Innovations in working with diverse students

Educational institutions need to find new and innovative ways of engaging with their diverse body of students. In an age of social and interactive media, often, institutions are finding it hard to keep up with the technology and to understand the new patterns of engagement amongst young people. Areas of service delivery such as student support, academic support, counselling, information provision are all affected by new patterns in communication. Questions have been asked within educational institutions around; What needs to be done in terms of how we engage with diverse groups of students? What resources are essential? Where are students getting their information? Do all students use these social technologies? In the Homestay context, how do we moderate internet use?

In 2011, the ISANA Conference will explore innovations in how we engage with diverse groups of students constructively. The Conference is also calling for papers reporting on institutions' experience of working with new technologies and programs, in the effort to engage with students more effectively.

About ISANA

ISANA began as the Overseas Student Advisers’ Network (OSAN) in 1989. It was formed as a special interest group of the Australian and New Zealand Student Services Association (ANZSSA), as a network of people in new roles of delivering support services to international students. OSAN, later renamed the International Student Advisers’ Network of Australia, conducted conferences, and addressed issues of international student experiences in Australia. It very rapidly expanded to include New Zealand members and, in 2002, a New Zealand branch was formed. It has also expanded well beyond being of interest just to student service personnel to encompass all aspects and professions involved with international education. Because of the expansion of membership in 1999 ISANA adopted the name, ISANA: International Education Association Inc.
