Invitation to AttendThe IUFRO Canopy Processes Working group is hosting its next meeting in south east Australia. The Canopy Processes group aims to promote interaction and collaboration among a broad spectrum of forest scientists, including ecologists, ecophysiologists, micrometeorologists, geneticists and spatial scientists. Forest canopies regulate the exchange of carbon, water and energy between the atmosphere and ecosystem. Therefore forest canopies will play an integral role in mitigating the effects of climate change on ecosystem structure and function. Although Australia is the driest permanently inhabited continent on earth it contains vast forest resources including the tallest angiosperms on earth, Eucalpytus regnans. Furthermore, the emergence of carbon emission trading schemes suggests that tree planting is likely to rapidly expand, placing further pressure on already limited resources such as water. To quantify and manage these potential impacts we need to understand forest and canopy function. In keeping with tradition, this meeting will be a travelling workshop, encompassing research sites in the alpine ecosystems of Victoria and temperate wet schlerophyll forests of Tasmania. All delegates will be encouraged to participate either through poster or oral presentations. Selected papers from the meeting will be published in a special edition of the journal Tree Physiology. We will also endeavour to offer a range of affordable accommodation options to encourage participation from students and scientists from developing countries. We will be providing more information about this meeting, including its science program and invited speakers on the website. Due to logistical constraints we will unfortunately have to limit the number of participants. We look forward to an exciting meeting and tour of the beautiful forests of south-east Australia.
